The first overseas training base for IC industry to be established at CTU in Prague

Today, Vojtěch Petráček, rector of CTU, and Hou Tuo-Hung, Director General of TSRI, have signed two major documents – a Memorandum of Cooperation and, most importantly, an agreement to establish a Taiwanese training base for international professionals working in chip development – IC.

Rector Vojtěch Petráček considers Taiwan an important strategic partner of university research. CTU will partner with the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), whose Director General, Hou Tuo-Hung, already visited CTU last year as a member of a Taiwanese delegation. Today Mr. Petráček and Mr. Hou have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation; the cooperation under the memorandum will initially continue for five years. It also specifies CTU and TSRI’s shared interest in the development of semiconductors. 

Hou Tuo-Hung reiterated that Taiwan is the global leader in the manufacture, packaging and testing of semiconductors and second in the world in chip design and is set to develop its unique position. “I and my colleagues working at all our faculties are pleased that we will become important partners in this unique project,” said Vojtěch Petráček, rector of CTU.

The other document Mr. Petráček and Mr. Hou have signed and which specifies the manner of cooperation is the agreement on the “cultivation of talent in IC design”. Based on the agreement, CTU students will also be trained at the TSRI training research centre, which will be located at CTU. More than 500 students are expected to take part in the programme in the next 5 years. CTU will be responsible for establishing collaboration on research with other selected universities in Europe; the research and teaching will be supported by the Taiwanese partner. “This is a unique opportunity that we can provide for our colleagues – students and researchers – and I am honoured that it is CTU in Prague that will become TSRI’s first overseas partner,” Mr. Petráček said after signing the two documents.

The project will open up new possibilities for Taiwan in international development, support mutual prosperity, benefit Taiwan and international supply chains for the semiconductor industry and become the driving force for sustainable innovation in the global semiconductor industry.
