Students Jana Hájková and Kristína Boháčová from the Faculty of Architecture of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava prepared the proposal of the embassy within the architectural studio course. “The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Addis Ababa lured us with the opportunity to try designing in a country with a completely different climate, culture and history. The project worked together for more than four months, preceded by research, familiarization with the traditions of African architecture, the usual building materials, local resources and ways of cooling buildings. The intention was to design an object on the principle of a self-sufficient micro-urban solution, where the employees of the embassy will live a full life. Several buildings with different purposes had to be solved within the premises. It is this diversity, from the public-representative to the private residential sphere, which prompted the authors to reflect on the concept and atmosphere of individual objects. The main element became the wall protecting the area, which is a necessary security element. The proposal also focused on the application of sustainability principles. Buildings are made of classic burnt bricks, in the buildings we use passive ventilation, the so-called wind catcher, which is a typical way of Africa 'wind blower' in the form of a chimney. The soon-to-be architects also thought about the use of the residents of the embassy premises - buildings intended for housing include not only terraces and swimming pools, but also utility gardens that will give their owners a certain self-sufficiency.

Out of a total of 281 projects from around the world, 25 of the best projects have entered the final category of the Embassy Implementation category. They were students from three continents, 17 universities and 12 nationalities. The new embassy premises will be built on a land area of 13,304 square meters, with a complex of buildings including the embassy's official building, the consular and visa sections, the ambassador's residence, diplomatic apartments and the embassy's local staff building. An investment of CZK 225 million is planned for the construction and under optimum conditions everything should be completed by 2025. The new complex will replace the original complex, which was purchased in 1966.
