Ing. Marek Sokol, a doctoral student of the Department of Health Sciences and Population Protection and a member of the scientific team of Biomechanics and Assistive Technologies, is currently on a scientific research trip to one of the most remote parts of the world - Antarctica, specifically to the Czech J. G. Mendel Scientific Station. Marek is part of the expedition, where he is researching the impact of extreme conditions on the human body and innovative technologies for remote monitoring of human health.

His journey began on 1 January 2024 with a departure from Brno, followed by a flight from Vienna to Buenos Aires. There, the members of the expedition had the opportunity to visit the Czech Embassy. After several days of waiting for favourable weather and coordination with the Argentine army, they were transported by Hercules military aircraft to the base in Río Gallegos. After a short stay at the Argentine base, the international team moved by helicopter to James Ross Island, where the Czech J. G. Mendel Scientific Station is located.

These days Marek is already working intensively on his research and dissertation. He is testing and optimizing promising technologies for remote monitoring of people in extreme and isolated conditions. In his activities he is also significantly supported by the Czech Antarctic Research Programme at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University.
