Open-Cube is a new platform based on the popular Raspberry Pi PICO. It aims to replace the now hard to find or worn out LEGO Mindstorms that have been used so far in the Robots course or in various robotics competitions. It supports sensors and motors from both the NXT and EV3 kits, as well as self-developed sensors such as the laser rangefinder. Open-Cube is meant to be an open platform with available HW and FW source files that anyone can build and possibly contribute their own ideas to its development.

The team is currently looking for testers from FEL students interested in robotics who have the time and inclination to try out Open-Cube, provide feedback, help improve the result, or build something interesting for presentations at faculty events for the public! For more information, please visit the project website at https://open-cube.fel.cvut.cz If interested, please contact Dr. Vojtech Petruch, Open-Cube Team Leader, at petruvoj@fel.cvut.cz.

Open-Cube was created in the Department of Measurement, with students from the Cybernetics and Robotics program behind the development. The origins were in a team project, the main firmware development was done in the framework of the bachelor theses of Jakub Vaněk and Václav Jelínek, the HW cubes are mostly the work of PhD student David Novotný. The 3D printing of the components was greatly helped by Michal Dressler. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU contributed to the project in the form of RPAPS projects in 2022 and 2023, the sponsor of the production of the pilot series of Open-Cube is the company BTL.
