Ing. David Bernhauer, Ph.D. from FIT CTU, won the Josef Hlávka Prize, which is awarded to talented students who have demonstrated exceptional ability and creative thinking in their field. He received the award both for his dissertation, Similarity Search in Unstructured Data using Data-Transitive Models, and for his teaching and popular science activities as well. He received his diploma at the castle in Lužany on 16 November, 2023.

David Bernhauer was one of the 54 best awarded students and graduates of Prague universities, Brno technology and young scientists of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He is currently completing his PhD studies and is a member of the Department of Software Engineering. He received the award for his dissertation thesis Similarity Search in Unstructured Data using Data-Transitive Models and also for his teaching and popular science activities, where he tries to pass on his knowledge to younger students and motivate them in their work.

"Connecting science and practice is what motivates me about my research on similarity search. Applications using just similarity search are encountered at every step today, from image retrieval, duplicate detection to recommender systems. But science cannot work without knowledge transfer, which is why I try to take a personalized approach in my teaching. However, I see the biggest challenge as being to be able to explain how a principle can be applied in a given field so that I can motivate other students," said David Bernhauer.

The "Josef, Marie and Zdeňka Hlávek Talent" award is intended for talented students who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and creative thinking in their field, up to the age of 33. Together with the award, the laureates receive a foundation contribution of CZK 30,000. The proposal for the award is sent to the Foundation's Board of Directors by the rectors of Czech universities in Prague and Brno University of Technology.
