Ambassador Tae Jin Kim of the Republic of Korea visited the VR-1 Vrabec nuclear reactor operated by the Faculty of Nuclear and Physical Engineering of CTU in Prague (FJFI) in early December 2021. He was accompanied by the Rector of CTU doc. Vojtěch Petráček, Dean of the FJFI prof. Igor Jex and Head of the Department of Nuclear Reactors Jan Rataj.

"We are one of the few universities in the world that operates two school reactors - in addition to the VR-1, we also have a fusion reactor - the Golem tokamak. Moreover, the construction of the second fission reactor VR-2 is already underway, which the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea could see with his own eyes," says doc. Vojtěch Petráček.

The visit of Ambassador Tae Jin Kim follows this year's visit of delegates of our University to the Republic of Korea as part of the Korea-Czech Forum for the Future. "During this event, we met with representatives of Korean universities and scientific departments. There are many opportunities for closer cooperation not only in the field of nuclear energy, but also in a number of other fields and technologies, such as radiopharmaceuticals, quantum technologies, decommissioning, and preservation of cultural monuments," explains Prof. Igor Jex.

In the subsequent discussion between representatives of CTU and the Korean Ambassador and his entourage, they agreed on their mutual interest in developing cooperation in both scientific and educational fields.

South Korea, with a population of almost 52 million, is one of ten largest economies in the world. It is particularly prominent in information and communication technologies, including semiconductors and 5G communications. This also makes it one of the world's largest exporters. The Korean company KHNP is one of the bidders for the completion of the Dukovany nuclear power plant. The Republic of Korea operates four nuclear power plants.
