Junior Star projects subsidized by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic aim to support the best budding scientists up to 8 years after obtaining their Ph.D. The financial support will help them pursue their own scientific projects, as well as start their own research group and promote excellence. In this year's call, only 16 projects in all scientific fields across the Czech Republic were chosen for funding out of a total of 315 submitted proposals. Of these, two projects from CTU in Prague were supported, namely from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Transport.

The recipient of this prestigious support from the Faculty of Transport of CTU is Ing. Tomáš Fíla, Ph.D., from the Institute of Mechanics and Materials. His project focuses on the use of fast flash X-ray imaging to describe the behavior of materials under impact loading. The grant budget of more than CZK 20 million will facilitate expansion of the research infrastructure of DynLab, which Dr. Fíla leads, and forming of a strong group of young researchers at the Institute of Mechanics and Materials dedicated to this promising field.

"I am proud that we have succeeded in the competition of more than 300 grant proposals and are among the 16 projects to be supported. The five-year grant will allow us to expand the research infrastructure of our DynLab and create a strong research group in the promising field of materials behavior research," says Ing. Tomáš Fíla, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Transport of CTU.

Thanks to the grant, a researcher from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU, RNDr. Zuzana Kúkelová, Ph.D., will be able to fund her basic research projects, which are expected to have a significant scientific impact on a global scale, over the next five years. Of the sixteen selected projects, only Zuzana Kúkelová's project is in the field of computer science.

Dr. Zuzana Kúkelová works at the Department of Cybernetics in the Visual Recognition Group, led by Prof. Jiří Matas. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU will thus have three winners of this prestigious award. In 2020, the recipients included Dr. Giorgios Tolias (also from the Visual Recognition Group of the Department of Cybernetics) and Assoc. Miloslav Čapek from the Department of Electromagnetic Fields.

Starting next year, half of the supported projects will be carried out at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, three at Masaryk University in Brno and two at Czech Technical University in Prague. Czech University of Agriculture in Prague, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice and University of Chemical Technology in Prague will conduct one project each.
