The main prize in the Czech Press Photo 2020 competition was won by ČTK reporter Roman Vondrouš. Among the 5,000 photographs, he succeeded with a picture of a man passing through a disinfection gate, which was installed as a measure against the spread of coronavirus at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

"Coincidentally, the winning photo captures Tomáš Mikolov, a world-renowned expert in the development of artificial intelligence, who works at the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics of the Czech Technical University," says the CTU Rector doc. Vojtěch Petráček.

The winning photograph by Roman Vondrouš captures Tomáš Mikolov, who was on his way to the National Industrial Summit. It took place on September 9, 2020 in the Bethlehem Chapel. The event was organized by the National Center for Industry 4.0 and CIIRC CTU for directors and members of the boards of directors of leading industrial companies in the Czech Republic, top government officials and personalities from the technical sciences and academia.

Tomáš Mikolov belongs to the Czech scientific leadership in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). During his career he managed to work for Google, Facebook or Microsoft, but in 2020 he returned to research in the Czech Republic at the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics CTU as a leading researcher within the newly built European Center of Excellence RICAIP.

Yet another of his successes was when he received a grant for his CIIRC research group from GoodAI, an artificial intelligence research and development company. The company donated $ 24,000 from its total grant of $ 300,000 to researchers at CIIRC CTU. The grant will support the implementation of a project to accelerate research into the artificial intelligence of the human level. The project will be managed by Tomáš Mikolov.

"Of course, we are very pleased that we managed to capture a moment that connects art, science and industry during the National Industrial Summit and at the same time symbolizes the feeling of the present very aptly," says Ondřej Velek, director of CIIRC CTU.
