Water managers from Středočeské vodárny (Central Bohemian Waterworks), the city of Kladno and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FBMI) will work on joint research. It will focus on the occurrence and impact of drugs, nanomaterials and hormones in wastewater.

"Our colleagues from KPO deal with various environmental issues, for example, examining the impact of the release of various substances, hormones, drugs, etc. into wastewater. It is, for example, the issue of hormonal contraception, the elimination of drugs, or various nanomaterials and radioactivity that appear or may appear in wastewater and no one knows exactly what some of them may cause. With this research, together with the waterworks , we would like to contribute to solving this problem, "said FBMI Vice-Dean Prof. Jozef Rosina. over applied research in the field of ecology.

Representatives of the mentioned institutions signed a memorandum of cooperation. According to the mayor of Kladno, Dan Jiránek, the partnership between the city, the university and water managers was also greatly strengthened by the coronavirus crisis, when the faculty created a prototype of a simple, fully functional lung ventilator that is already in commercial production and available for healthcare. A significant financial contribution from Středočeské vodárny also helped to develop and improve it.

One of the concrete outputs of the cooperation will also be the establishment of a joint research center or educational institute in the area of the former Kladno barracks. Here the faculty already has its premises and received another building from the city. This building is supposed to be entirely dedicated to biology and chemistry, which means that joint work with water managers would take place here.

According to Jakub Hanzel, General Director of Středočeské vodárny, the idea of a joint educational institute of a university and water managers is still in its infancy and its form has not yet been decided.
