Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, the entire healthcare system has had to protect not only patients, but especially physicians themselves, from Covid-19 infection. But how can one protect himself during demanding neurosurgical operations, during which the operating doctor requires maximum freedom?

Neurosurgeons from Na Homolce Hospital chose the Easybreath full-face snorkeling mask, for which maintenance workers hastily shaped a reduction for the HME filter from novodur. However, this solution was not sufficient both from a hygienic and functional point of view. Therefore, doctors approached our experts - Ing. Jan Zavřel, Ph.D. and doc. Ing. Ivo Bukovský, Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanics, Biomechanics and Mechatronics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, to come up with a solution.

Our experts immediately set out to work, and soon a prototype reduction was ready to connect the HME filter with the Easybreath full-face mask, which was sealed, held in place and was easy to use. The design of the reduction was optimized from the very beginning for the production of additive technology (3D printing from plastic) and therefore the production on 3D printers could start in a short time, directly at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The quick solution of our experts thus helped the neurosurgeons of Na Homolce Hospital to perform demanding operations even during difficult hygienic conditions and help people who needed it most..
