In the Hall of the Year competition, which has been organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering for many years, the task of 2-3 member student teams is to design a model of a structure according to the assignment, build it and then subject it to a load test until its collapse. The final ranking of the models is determined by the efficiency of the model, i.e. the ratio between the total load capacity of the model and its own weight. This year's edition, which took place on 18-19 April and 21 April 2023, premiered three competition categories - for undergraduates from technical colleges, for high school students and for PhD students - and was marked by enormous student interest.

10 university faculties competed in the Akademik 2023 Hall of the Year

The Akademik 2023 Hall of the Year competition is intended for students of technical universities in which 49 teams from ten faculties of universities, including three teams from the Wrocław University of Technology in Poland measured their skills. The task of the fifth edition of the internationally renowned competition was to prepare a model of a cut-out structure of a landfill with a conveyor, intended for the storage of bulk materials. The winning team's model weighed 403 grams and carried a load of 74,262 grams. Its authors, the Spaghetti al dente team consisting of Petr Sokol, Ondřej Pokorný and Tomáš Tuček from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, were awarded fifty thousand crowns for their first place.

The capacity of the competition was filled by interest of high school students

For the first time in its 15-year history, the registration of high school teams for the Hala roku Junior 2023 competition had to be closed before the registration deadline, as the absolute capacity of the competition filled up quickly. 37 teams competed in Category A, in which students from secondary industrial schools and grammar schools prepared a model of the structure at home. The victory and a prize of fifteen thousand crowns went to the team Surely It Won't Fall! from the Secondary School and Secondary Vocational School of Economics in Sedlčany. The model representing a section of the construction of a landfill with a conveyor, designed for the storage of bulk materials, by students Luboš Vlásek and Vojtěch Černý weighed 1140.3 grams and carried a load of 100,000 grams. Thirty-nine teams competed in Category B, in which students prepared the model on the day of the competition at the faculty from supplied materials. The first prize and 15,000 crowns went to the team The Most Architectonical, consisting of Matěj Hanuš, Tomáš Davidík and Matěj Houdek from the Josef Gočár Secondary School. Their model, representing a section of a typical warehouse hall truss structure, weighed 472.1 grams and carried a load of 63,314 grams.

The doctoral student model was created overnight

The task of the PhD students in the first year of the category Hall of the Year Advanced 2023 was to build a two-meter tower from the supplied materials. A total of 11 teams from two universities competed in the competition, where students prepared their model overnight at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The best team was HorSta-i, consisting of Pavel Horák and Vojtěch Starý from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of CTU. Their model weighed 733.7 grams and carried a load of 50,000 grams.

Under the auspices of the Dean and ČKAIT, with the support of companies

The Hall of the Year competition is organized by Faculty of Civil Engineering of CTU under the auspices of the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Jiří Máca and ČKAIT. The expert guarantor is the Department of Civil Structures of the faculty, the competition is led by doc. Vladimír Ždára. The competition helps students to understand how loads act on a structure and what its weaknesses may be. During the load test, weights are placed on the model according to the exact definition until the structure collapses. This allows students to see where the weak point was and why the destruction occurred. The general partner of the competition is HOCHTIEF CZ and it is also supported by a number of major companies from the construction sector.
