Students from the Faculty of Transportation Sciences, as well as the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of CTU in Prague took part in the international Moto Engineering Italy race with their electric racing motorcycle CTU Lions EVO 2.0 at the circuit in Imola, Italy.

A total of 9 student teams from the best technical universities from all over Europe presented their projects during the race week and then competed against each other on the circuit - in addition to the Czech team, there were university teams from Italy, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Portugal and Spain. The CTU Lions team did very well in the static disciplines, with their technical report and subsequent presentation to the expert jury coming in second place just behind the home team from Bologna, Italy. For the rest of the competition week, the team was thus in a good starting position and also motivated to further its own development, evaluated positively by the Italian jury.

In the middle of the race week, dynamic disciplines began on a track built right on the finishing straight of the Enzo Ferrari circuit. These disciplines were the traditional 80 km/h braking, skill driving and acceleration. The following days were followed by free practice sessions on the circuit and then qualifying for the race. The highlight of the event was the two mass start races, unfortunately in heavy rain conditions. The CTU Lions managed to qualify for the race from fifth place on the wet circuit. Shortly before the start, the FIM then announced a wet race due to the incessant rain, i.e. the obligation for all teams to use only wet tyres. The team was prepared for this situation and after changing the EVO 2.0 entered the race. During the dynamic disciplines and qualifying, the team took advantage of the innovations on its motorcycle and, after consulting with the rider, was able to adjust the suspension and the angle of the front suspension fork on the bike.

CTU Lions driver Radek Lamich showed shortly after the start that driving in the wet can be an advantage. He used his experience and managed to fight his way to the front of the starting field. At the end of the second lap he led the whole race, overtaking even the champion of the competition, the motorcycle from the home University of Bologna. While the rain suited the rider, it did not suit the electric prototype. Despite repeatedly passing the water-resistance tests, it began to lose power on the third lap and eventually had to withdraw from the race. For safety reasons, he then withdrew from the second warm-up of the final race.

Despite the problems in the final race, the CTU Lions placed sixth overall out of 9 teams. The team returns home knowing that their motorcycle can boldly compete with the top student teams. The experience gained will help both in future races and in the design of the CTU Lions EVO 3.0 Electric currently under development.
