Prof. Ing. Jan Macek, DrSc., FEng. from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has been dealing with means of transport and energy and environmental aspects of transport throughout his professional career by means of simulations and experiments on vehicle power units. He has been educating students for decades, mainly in master and doctoral programmes. He is the author of hundreds of technical papers published in national and international professional and specialized media and is frequently quoted. He also has twenty patents to his credit. He was honored for his life's work this week at the International Engineering Fair in Brno.

Currently, Prof. Macek works at Centre for Sustainable Mobility Vehicles at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and leads the Josef Božek National Centre of Competence for Land Transport Vehicles, bringing together the research of 30 academic, research and industrial participants. For their work in the Josef Božek Centre of Competence for Automotive Industry, the team led by him received the 2018 annual TAČR Cooperation Award.

Curriculum vitae of prof. Macek:

In 1972 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague in the field of piston machines with an extension in applied mechanics. He continued his studies by scientific aspiration at the training workplace of the State Research Institute for Machine Building in Běchovice and in 1980 he obtained the scientific rank of CSc. In 1986 he was awarded the title of Associate Professor at the CTU, four years later he defended his doctoral thesis in the scientific field of Transport Machinery and Equipment at CTU and was awarded the title of DrSc. In 1993 he was appointed professor in the field of Power Engineering Machines and Equipment. In 1998 he was admitted to the Engineering Academy of the Czech Republic (FEng.). He is a member of the Scientific Council of CTU and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Professional and pedagogical activities:

In 1972-1980, he worked as a researcher at the Research Institute of ČKD Prague in the diesel engine research department, where he continued as head of the high-pressure supercharging research department in 1986-1991, even after the transfer of VÚ ČKD to Škoda Interdiesel Smíchov. With a team of fifty members, which he led, he solved complex research tasks for the company. At the same time, from 1982 he taught at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague at the Department of Automobiles, Internal Combustion Engines and Rail Vehicles, which he also headed from 1994 to 2015. He was elected Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1997 and served until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 he was Vice Dean of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for scientific and research activities. In 1990 and 1991, he taught abroad at Sinclair College, Dayton Ohio and three years later spent 6 months as a visiting scientist at ETH Zurich as part of the Junge Professoren initiative of the Swiss Confederation.

As an educator, he has also participated in many research tasks. From 1998 to 2000 he was the head of the research project Integrated Engineering at the Faculty of Science of the Czech Technical University in Prague. In the following 11 years he was the head of the Josef Božek Research Centre for Combustion Engines and Automobiles, coordinating the activities of about 140 employees of various institutions and solving projects focused on propulsion, engines and fuels. From 2012 to 2017, he led the Josef Božek Automotive Competence Centre (2012-2017) as a project principal researcher, coordinating some research and development activities at selected manufacturing and research companies and technical universities in the Czech Republic.

This project is followed by the already mentioned National Centre of Competence. Since 1996, it has also worked closely with Thomas Morel, former President of Gamma Technologies and principal author of the GT Suite software used by virtually all automotive and large engine manufacturers worldwide. He was instrumental in the official partnership of CTU with this company, where the only other university partner is Politecnico di Torino.
