From 19 to 21 November 2021, nearly 200 Czech and international hackers competed at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague at the European Health Hackathon 2021. The aim of the event, which was also partly held online, was to create innovations in healthcare within 48 hours. The winner of the weekend marathon was the UrineMeter project by students of the Faculty of Information Technology of the Czech Technical University, which enables automatic and accurate measurement of urine released by patients. Thanks to the device, the time of healthcare professionals is saved, and there is no need to disturb the patient during the measurement. The winning team, called Bit Beasts, was presented with a cheque for EUR 3,000 by Health Minister Adam Vojtěch.

Nearly 200 hackers in 38 innovation teams met for the fourth time at the health hackathon. The young hackers were looking for solutions to 15 healthcare challenges that closely relate to the involvement of technology in diagnosis and treatment, in areas such as cardiology, diabetes, chronic diseases, or even patient comfort and orientation in a healthcare facility.

The main prize was awarded to the UrineMeter project of the Bit Beasts team consisting of Daniel Zábojník, Ondřej Bohatý and Andrej Ladislav Kováč. UrineMeter is a device that is placed between the bed and the urine bag, accurately measuring the volume of urine excreted. The data is sent via the Internet directly to the information system of the medical facility. The device saves time for healthcare professionals, and there is no need to disturb the patient during the measurement.

"Our device automatically measures the urine output of patients in healthcare facilities. The data is sent via the internet to a database where the doctor or nurse can easily see the tables and important values without disturbing the patient for the measurement," says Daniel Zábojník, a member of the winning team, adding: "We deliberately chose the topic of measuring continuous urine output because I have personally encountered the issue of an inserted catheter in the hospital. We would like the device to be put into practice and make the work of the medical staff easier."

A team of mentors from IKEM doctors, artificial intelligence and data analysis experts were available to the hackers all the time.
