The Department of Nuclear Reactors of the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the CTU has prepared a unique event called Reactor Physicist Day for secondary school students on 9 and 13 September 2021, which will include a visit to the school's VR-1 reactor and the opportunity to try out measurements of important physical quantities necessary for reactor operation. In addition, several interesting lectures on nuclear reactor operation, nuclear safety and energy development will be given.

"Students will be able to try out neutron measurements in the reactor, learn how the fuel needs to be put together to make the reactor work, and other useful information. The lectures and measurements will be tailored to the knowledge of a high school student, so no more knowledge is needed," adds Ing. Ondřej Novák from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of CTU.

The VR-1 nuclear reactor has two independent reactor performance monitoring systems. These are operational power measurement and independent power protection. Each system has its own distinct hardware and software solution and contains 4 detectors, with 3 in measurement and one in hot standby. The measured values are evaluated by a 2 out of 3 voting logic and if the set limits are exceeded, the reactor is shut down. The limits restrict, for example, the reactor power, the rate of power change and the deviation from the set power.

Registration is open until 28 August 2021.
