A total of thirty young girls decided to devote one holiday week to an unconventional exploration of the world of IT. The sixth edition of the IT Summer School, organized by the Czechitas in cooperation with the CTU in Prague, will take place from Monday 12 to Friday 16 July 2021 at the Faculty of Information Technology of the CTU. The aim of the event is to show high school girls that studying computer science at university can be fun for girls and that it is not just a world of ones and zeros.

During the IT Summer School programme, girls will get to know many areas of computer science and will see for themselves that IT is not just a boring session at the computer. During the week-long program they will learn the basics of programming (IoT, CSS, JavaScript, HTML), robotics and vector graphics. After an intensive four days of training, the participants will have a final full-day hackathon during which they will work on their own projects. The whole event will culminate with a gala evening at the Rectorate of CTU, where the participants will present their work and knowledge in front of an expert committee consisting of representatives of partner companies and Czechitas.

"It is no longer true that the IT world is only a male domain. Yet many women are not confident in this field. That's why we want girls to see that IT is not just about programming, and our Summer School is designed to show them that IT is a field that can offer them interesting jobs. Girls don't have to be afraid to apply for IT, even if they are discouraged by their surroundings," says Tereza Nedjalková, Tech & Education Specialist.

This is also confirmed by one of the participants, Eliška, who is now studying at the Faculty of Information Technology at CTU: "My mother tried to convince me to study medicine and almost succeeded, but in the end I found out that I would not enjoy biology as much as computer science."

The girls will also try their hand at working in the laboratories of the Faculty of Information Technology, where they will meet humanoid robots. They will visit the Image Processing Laboratory, where they will learn, among other things, how thermal imaging cameras work. "We are glad that the IT Summer School for Girls is being held at our faculty. Thanks to this event, many girls find out that their future lies in IT and apply to us. On average, 15% of girls currently study at the Faculty of Information Technology. I am happy that these events are organised, because thanks to them girls are not afraid of technical education and more and more of them choose IT as their field of study. The faculty offers education even to complete beginners, who will become IT experts after graduation," says the Vice-Dean for External Relations, doc. Josef Kolář from the Faculty of Information Technology of CTU.

The IT Summer School is designed as a week-long camp with a fixed programme from 8.30 to 18.00. The main program takes place in the computer classrooms of the Faculty of Information Technology. The evening program is mostly for excursions in companies. This year's program is supported by partners Škoda auto a.s., Nestlé, Unicorn and Huawei and includes 30 high school students.
