Every high school student can become a particle physicist working on top international research at the CERN World Laboratory. All that is need is to take part in the event ‘Become a particle physicist for a day’, that has been organized for eight years at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering, which is the mainstay of particle and nuclear sciences in the Czech Republic and an active partner of CERN. This year, the event will take place on Friday 8 March 2019 from 9.30 to 17.00 in the main building of the faculty at Břehová Street (Prague 1).

For our high school students, our event is a great opportunity to find out how top international research is doing at one of CERN's most prestigious scientific workplaces. They will be lectured by people who have a lot of experience from CERN and other world laboratories. Through videoconference, CERN students will be able to discuss the results achieved with participants from other countries as well. The event is part of the International Masterclasses project, co-organized by the International Particle Physics Popularization Group (IPPOG), the European Physical Society (EPS) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Every year, about ten thousand students from around the world are involved.

At the faculty, the program begins with lectures in the morning. They will introduce students to the issue and facilitate their involvement in afternoon practical exercises: Searching for Higgs's boson from disintegration to Z0 boson on the ATLAS experiment on CERN's most powerful LHC accelerator, or Measuring the life of a chunky particle named D0 on the LHCb experiment on the LHC. The day students complete a videoconference with CERN, joined by other universities and institutions such as the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics in Naples, the research institute and the LIP-Minho University in Braga, Barcelona, Spain, University of the University of Barcelona, University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom or University of Cincinnati in the United States.

The detailed program and registration instructions for those interested in th becoming a particle physicist for a day are on the web.

The Faculty organizes a number of other events for high school students in order to get acquainted with its environment and its scientific projects. You can find an overview of events organised for high schools on its website.
