Dr. Horák graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University. He remembers his university studies in the 1950s as a period when teaching was based primarily on memorizing theoretical lessons. His real academic passion therefore soon became descriptive geometry, which he pursued with full enthusiasm.
After graduating, he worked first at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and then at the Faculty of Civil Engineering on the Dejvice campus of the Czech Technical University. While working among mechanical engineers he acquired a sense of detail, working at the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering provided him with the necessary overview and perspective. Even after retiring, Mr. Horák did not lose his energy and desire to be active. He remained in regular contact with his former workplace and became a member of the Czech Technical University Seniors Club, which he leads today.
“We usually meet once a month. First, there is a joint lecture, followed by an informal program. The topics of the lectures range from the current situation in Ukraine to the challenges of artificial intelligence to the hidden charms of beekeeping and questions of longevity. In December, we traditionally look forward to meeting the rector,” says Dr. Horák, who, with his vitality and proactive approach, is an embodied inspiration (and not only) for his peers.
