Oxford, Caltech, or Sydney. Even from these top-tier universities, applicants are expressing interest in a new grant program designed for early-career researchers who wish to establish their own research groups. One of the flagship initiatives of the new leadership at the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Starting Grant 2026, has advanced to the next phase. From nearly a hundred applicants, an international jury selected 20 finalists who will continue in the selection process.

The very first year of the Starting Program generated extraordinary interest. A total of 93 applicants from 29 countries across four continents applied. In addition to the Czech Republic, the most frequently represented countries included the United States and Germany.
“I am pleased that, alongside talented researchers from our university, promising candidates from globally renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford, Caltech, and the University of Sydney have also actively applied to the program. This response clearly demonstrates both the program’s appeal and the growing international reach of CTU’s research environment,” said Jan Zeman, Vice Rector for Science.
The program’s goal is to attract top-tier scientists with international experience to CTU who are eager to assemble their own research teams to work on ambitious scientific projects across various disciplines. This represents a significant investment in the university’s long-term strategy focused on research quality, openness, and international competitiveness.
The program, announced by CTU Rector Prof. Michal Pěchouček on the day he took office, is open to early-career academics with international experience and outstanding achievements. Those who are successful can receive up to four million crowns per year for three years to establish their own research group, and the program anticipates the creation of up to ten new teams.
