From 4 to 6 December 2020, the Center for International Development Projects ICWD at the Czech Technical University in Prague is organizing the first year of the educational program titled Project Marathon. It is intended for university students and the technically oriented public. It also invites experts with experience in technical fields. The event will take place online on Friday 4 December from 16.00 and on weekends always from 9.00.

In the opening part, participants will learn about the basic principles of design of buildings designed for climatically and culturally different regions. For this year, the organizers chose the project to be the one of the Praga-Haiti organization. The topic of the 2020 Project Marathon will be, on one hand, the design of a prefabricated building system for the Haiti region with limited availability of building materials and, on the other hand, the design of a self-sufficient permanent facility for a well drilling project in Haiti.

"The priority of the Praga-Haiti development project is drilling wells with drinking water in one of the poorest countries in the world, Haiti in the Caribbean. An irreplaceable part of our missions are also ‘golden Czech hands’ and technological know-how, which we try to gradually pass on to the Haitians. Participants in the CTU Project Marathon, which will focus on helping Haitians, will participate in solving specific problems of a technical nature, but will also create outputs that Praga-Haiti can use in practice and teach the local community new skills during subsequent missions. ”Says architect Petr Vacek for Prague-Haiti.

"A big task for the successful development of the project is to build its own self-sufficient base in Haiti, which will provide workers not only with shelter, but also a workshop for repairing drilling equipment, an office for other development organizations in the area and a space for a small technology school. There will be two topics to choose from. The first is to design a system of prefabricated building elements that will allow the construction of quality buildings in hard-to-reach places, where there is a great shortage of almost any building material except cement, and where there is also a risk of a hurricane strike. The second topic is the design of a temporary building created from two shipping containers and basic building structures, which will serve as a temporary background for workers, a service mini-garage and a prefabricated material workshop for the construction of a large project base, ”adds Petr Vacek.
