They mined gold here and there was still some left. Now they are testing nuclear waste storage here too.

A stone's throw from here is the Slapy water reservoir. The former gold mine has now been transformed into the Josef underground laboratory. It is operated by the Czech Technical University, but gold is no longer mined here, even if some were found. The university now carries out a number of research projects here.
